In Canada, immigrants face tough challenges, including the recognition of their qualifications for employment. This struggle has resulted in many young immigrants and those with a university education contemplating leaving the country within the next two years. The high cost of living and job-related obstacles, such as the competitiveness of the Canadian market, not only make it challenging for young immigrants to establish themselves but also jeopardize Canada's workforce diversity and talent.
Our research supports a national survey that indicates 40% of newcomers feel undervalued at work, despite feeling safe. The survey also highlights a lack of reporting discrimination and emphasizes the urgent need for better reporting systems. Additionally, half of the respondents see discrimination against immigrants as a significant problem, and 38% struggle with learning a new language.
The stories we collected emphasize the need for more inclusive workplaces in Canada, where everyone feels genuinely welcome. Basic steps such as diverse interview panels, language support, and fair pay, regardless of one's origin, are crucial. Immigrants we spoke to shared their difficult experiences, including feeling unwelcome, facing job rejections based on assumptions about their language skills, and being told they lack "Canadian experience" despite having exceptional skills. One person even shared a five-year battle to acknowledge their previous recognition in Canada, exposing a frustrating barrier known as the "First Canadian experience." These real stories underscore the urgency of addressing these challenges head-on and ensuring that Canada remains a place where everyone is welcome.
<aside> 💡 The problem is that immigrants in Canada face difficulties in competing with the competitive Canadian job market. High living costs, job barriers, and challenges in recognizing their qualifications contribute to these struggles. As a result, many immigrants consider leaving the country, which not only impacts their lives but also raises concerns about the future and inclusivity of the nation.
